Introduction
The Community Living Camp conducted by Adi Sankara Training
College, Kalady, was a five-day immersive residential programme intended to
promote values of cooperation, empathy, discipline, and civic responsibility
among teacher trainees. The camp focused on experiential learning through group
activities, lectures, field visits, and cultural expressions. The theme of the
camp emphasized holistic education through community engagement and practical
exposure.
Day 1: Inaugural Day – Monday, 06/03/2023
Reporting and Inaugural Ceremony
Participants reported at 2:15 PM. The Inaugural Ceremony held
from 3:00 PM to 5:00 PM marked the formal commencement of the camp. The session
began with a prayer followed by:
· Welcome Address by Sri. Rajesh M P (Assistant
Professor, ASTC)
· Presidential Address by Dr. N. K. Arjunan (Principal,
ASTC)
· Inaugural Address by Dr. Preethi Nair (Principal,
Sree Sankara College, Kalady)
· Felicitation by Sri. Sijo George (Asst.
Prof., ASIET, Kalady)
· Felicitation by Smt.
Praseeda V (Vise Principal,ASTC)
· Vote of Thanks by Sandra V Sathyan (Camp
Leader)
Evening Session
· Session 1 (6:00 – 8:00
PM): Ice Breaking Session led
by Sri. Dixon P Thomas,
which helped participants get to know each other and establish rapport.
· Dinner and cleaning
followed from 8:00 to 9:00 PM.
· From 9:00 to 10:00 PM,
cultural events were organized, where students showcased talents through songs,
skits, and group games.
· The day concluded with
bedtime at 10:30 PM.
Day 2: Tuesday, 07/03/2023
Morning Activities
· Zumba (7:00 – 7:30 AM)
energized the participants for the day ahead.
· Session 2 (10:00 – 11:00 AM):
A class on Cyber Crime was
conducted by Mr. Thalhath,
a Cyber Cell Officer, who explained common online threats and digital safety
practices.
Afternoon Sessions
· Session 3 (1:00 – 4:00
PM): Farm Visit to
the ADA State Seed Farm, Aluva, where students learned about organic farming techniques
and sustainable agriculture.
· Session 4 (4:00 – 6:30
PM): Old Age Home Visit to
Lissy Bhavan, Kanjoor. Participants interacted with the residents, offered
emotional support, and performed cultural items to cheer them up.
Evening Events
· Session 5 (7:45 – 8:00
PM): Visual performance
and class on Mohiniyattam by MA Mohiniyattam students from
Sree Sankaracharya Sanskrit University, Kalady. The session highlighted the
aesthetic and expressive aspects of the classical dance form.
· The day ended with dinner,
cultural events, and bedtime at 10:00 PM.
Day 3: Wednesday, 08/03/2023
Morning Celebrations
· A special assembly focused
on International
Women’s Day.
· Students shared thoughts,
and the college honored non-teaching
staff, recognizing their valuable contributions.
· A Women’s Day Musical Drama and Message were
delivered at Kalady Private Bus Stand as part of a community outreach
initiative.
Academic and Cultural Engagement
· Session 6 (10:00 AM – 12:00
PM): Visit to Sree
Sankaracharya Sanskrit University, Kalady, where participants
engaged in interactions with faculty and students, learning about Sanskrit
culture and traditions.
· Session 7 (2:45 – 4:30
PM): Class on Gender
Equity and Sustainable Menstruation by Ms. Ann Mariya Sabu, Program
Manager at Sustainable Menstrual Care Foundation. The session was informative
and promoted menstrual health awareness.
Creative Session
· Session 8 (5:00 – 7:00 PM): A
class on Documentary and
Short Film Making was led by Dr. Rajesh James (Assistant Professor,
Sacred Heart College, Thevara). He demonstrated the power of visual
storytelling in education.
Night Session
· Session 9: Theatre Visit to Four
Stars Theatre, Manjapra for a film experience as part of art appreciation.
· Participants returned by
midnight and retired to bed by 12:45 AM.
Day 4:Thursday, 09/03/2023
Field Visit Day
· Session 10 (9:00 AM): Visit
to Vettilappara
Plantation introduced students to spice cultivation and
sustainable plantation practices.
· Lunch was arranged
at Ezhattumugham,
followed by a visit to Vadavupura,
a scenic site for relaxation and bonding.
Campfire Night
· Evening preparations led
to the Campfire
Session from 8:00 to 10:00 PM. It included dinner, games,
dance, and group performances.
· Students shared
reflections on their experiences. The campfire symbolized unity, energy, and
shared learning.
· Lights out at 11:00 PM.
day 5: Friday, 10/03/2023
Final Sessions
· Session 11 (10:00 AM – 12:00
PM): Self Defence Class by Ms. Sharanya Nair (Trainer,
Union Christian College, Aluva). The session empowered female students with
practical self-defence skills.
Closing Activities
· The final day
included cultural
performances, camp
evaluation, and group reflections. Students presented feedback and
acknowledged the contributions of organizers and faculty.
· The camp concluded
with pack-up and
farewell in the evening.
Conclusion
The Community Living Camp at Adi Sankara Training College,
Kalady, was a transformative learning experience. It successfully integrated
physical activities, intellectual enrichment, cultural exposure, gender
sensitization, and community service. The camp fostered collaboration,
creativity, and leadership skills among future teachers, preparing them to be
socially responsible educators.
